Today science fiction becomes reality with the polypropylene (sometimes, called silly string) implant technique created by mad scientist Dr. Gerald W Johnson, who we shall refer to as Dr. Fakenstien. So, Dr. Fakenstien had gone back to the drawing board, his conclusion was not to have an outer shell the implant should be one solid or continuous piece. This logically leaves a polypropylene braid (or string) as the form of preferred choice for the implant.
The cosmetic results of the string implants have been very gratifying to Dr. Fakenstien and his team. As for the appearance, no saline or silicone implant can produce a better result. Many patients have difficulty understanding how an amorphous mass of string can produce such a natural appearing breast. Most women seeking a boob job have at some time in their lives stuffed their bras with cotton, Kleenex or other material, and the bra looks full and looks good. According to Dr. Fakenstien, the feel of the string-augmented breast are equal to or better than that of a soft silicone augmented breast as long as there is an adequate amount of serum in the breast.
In cases where the breast has less serum in the string, the feel is more like that of a young, fibrous and firm breast, but not like the firmness in an encapsulated silicone augmented breast. Even in most firm string implanted breasts, the firmness is not like the encapsulated silicone breast and the appearance of the breast remains, cosmetically, very good.
So, how do they do that? The operative technique in the primary augmentation or in the capsulectomy patient is for us to develop the pocket or resect the capsule just as we would if we intended to use saline or silicone implants. Dr. Fakenstien, states that the polypropylene implants is what requires the time, attention and detail. You can’t just go down to your local hardware store or carpet weaver, buy some polypropylene and run back to surgery and stick it in a patient. They must make certain the polypropylene string is brought up to medical grade. He anticipates one of the world’s major implant companies or medical instrument manufacturing companies will take an interest in the development of the string gun. The gun will come loaded with medical grade sterile polypropylene and will deliver it evenly, efficiently, accurately, and quickly into the breast from the belly button, any other remote location, axilla, nipple or inframammary incision. Thus far without this type delivery system, they are unable to use the alternate implants through an umbilical incision, choosing instead to go through inframammary incisions.
Dr. Fakenstien stated unlike the silicone and saline, which totally block X-rays on a mammogram. Polypropylene is more radiolucent than even normal breast tissue is, therefore where the polypropylene is present the passage of X-rays through the breast tissue is actually enhanced rather than being impaired or blocked.
